2020 was a year like no other that ushered in a wave of hardship, devastation, and loss. Yet, in the midst of all the pain, chaos, and uncertainty, I found solace in simple pleasures as life slowed down and we learned to adjust to a pandemic that brought the entire world to a standstill. I cherished every glimpse of light I found in darkness as well as the many people, places, and blessings that brought me peace and happiness.

Here are 20 ways that 2020 made me smile:

1. This turned out to be a year of self-discovery that gave me more time for self-care, reflection, and journaling.

2. Spending more time with God, praying, and practicing gratitude.

3. Developing my affinity for long walks.

4. Unexpectedly meeting my idol Oprah Winfrey, who has inspired my career in journalism, at her 2020 Vision Tour in February. Our encounter actually made me cry tears of joy.
